Enhancements

The following enhancements are part of SR 2016.05:

  • Low Capacity Warning Mail Solution: This feature sends a warning mail to the user notifying about the low capacity of the system and also recommends the user to buy the applicable hard disk bundle for StoreEasy 1650, 1650 Expaded and 1850 systems.

  • D6020 : The Pool Manager is enhanced with new pool rules to support D6020 disk enclosures.

  • Automatic SMI-S Provider Registration: This feature enables the SMI-S provider to register automatically on restart without launching the Register SMI–S provider tool each time to re-register.

Fixes

The following fixes are included in SR 2016.05:

  • Dashboard: The WCF Data Service is modified for memory optimization.

  • MSN link : when a network adapter becomes active on the StoreEasy servers, it retrieves an IP address and an unwanted MSN Internet Explorer pops up on the desktop. This popup is now removed.

Determining the current version

To determine if you must install the service release, you must verify the HPE System Installation and Recovery version that is running on the StoreEasy Storage. To determine the HPE System Installation and Recovery version, click Server Manager → Tools → HPE StoreEasy and click Manage Storage Pools.

An HPE System Installation and Recovery version that is less than the version listed in the Description section indicates that you are running an older version of the HPE StoreEasy Storage software. HPE recommends that you upgrade to the latest version.

To determine the current service release version for StoreEasy 3000 and 3PAR StoreServ File Controller:

  1. Log in to the server blade.

  2. Open a command window.

  3. Enter the following registry command and verify the service release version in the output:

    C:\> reg query HKLM\Software\Hewlett-Packard\StorageServer

A service release that is less than the version listed in the output indicates you are running an older version of the StoreEasy software. HPE recommends that you upgrade to the latest version.

TIP: You can also use the Pool Manager or System Dashboard to determine the current version of the service release. Pool Manager is available on HPE StoreEasy 1000 and 5000 Storages, and System Dashboard is available on HPE StoreEasy 1000, 3000, and 3PAR StoreServ File Controller.

Installation instructions

This section provides instructions on how to install updates using the Update Tool. For more information on using the Update Tool, click Help in the Update Tool wizard. For information on the installation prerequisites, see “Prerequisites for using the Update Tool with Clustered Systems”.

IMPORTANT:

  • Before installing the service release, ensure that the system drive on which you install the service release has a minimum 5GB of free space to accommodate the upgrade.

  • In the Standalone mode, when the installation in progress, you cannot stop or cancel the process. The Close button on the title bar is also unavailable during the installation.

Once you install the Update Tool, the Update Tool icon is displayed on the desktop. The Update Tool also creates SMB shares called Root and Script.

  • The Root share is created only if there is a minimum 5GB of free space in the system.

  • The Script share contains the PostUpdateScript.ps1 PowerShell script that monitors the SR installation progress.

  2. Select a mode: Standalone, Co-ordinate or Cluster mode

  4. On the Update Tool Input page, enter the required settings and click Next. The Update Tool Summary page appears.

  5. Click Install. The installation starts and the tool navigates to the Update Tool Result page, which provides the status of the installation.

NOTE: For Standalone mode, you cannot cancel the installation after the installation starts.

  6. Click Open Log to view the log files that the system generates during the update installation.

NOTE: For a cluster system, you must select individual nodes and then click Open Log to view the logs for that particular node.

  7. The update will complete installation after you reboot the system.

Click OK to exit the tool.

    • If no component in the SR package requires reboot, the application closes.

Installing updates using the Update Tool (Cluster or Coordinator mode)

  1. Launch the Update Tool by double-clicking the Update Tool icon on the desktop.

The available installation modes are displayed.

  2. Select Cluster or Coordinator and click Next.

NOTE: For clusters with more than two nodes, select the Standalone mode after launching the Update Tool and then run the tool on each node of the cluster.

  3. Enter the domain username and password and click Next.

NOTE: The cluster name is displayed by default only if you select Cluster on the mode selection screen.

The System Configuration Summary screen appears on which you can view the selected mode, name of the system, path of the update package, and a list of components to be installed.

  4. Click Install.

The progress and status of each task is displayed.

  5. Click Open Log to view the HPIM log of the selected node or click Close to close the Update Tool.

NOTE:

  • The Open Log and Close buttons are enabled only when the installation completes. These buttons are disabled when the installation is in progress.

  • During installation, if you encounter the following message:An internal powershell error occured. Please view the logs for more details.Navigate to C:\hpnas\logs\UpdateTool\ to view the Update Tool logs. The logs indicated in the error message are the Update Tool logs, not HPIM logs of the system on which you launched the Update Tool.

If any component in the service release package requires a reboot, a warning message is displayed when you click Close. You can either proceed with the system restart or restart the system later to apply the updates. After installing the updates, you can uninstall the Update Tool from Control Panel.

Issues and workarounds

  • To un-install the previous version of the Update Tool and to start the installation of this SR, perform the following steps:

    1. OpenControl Panel –> Programs –> Programs and Features

    2. Un-install Update Tool.

    3. Install SrPackage_2012R2_2016.05.5.msi.

  • The following message is displayed while installing updates in the Cluster or Coordinator mode using the Update Tool:The updating run has failed or has been cancelled.

    Perform the following steps:

    1. Go to Control Panel → System and Security → Windows Firewall.

    2. Click Allow a program through Windows Firewall.

    3. Verify that the following programs are allowed through Windows Firewall:

      • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)

      • Windows Remote Management

      • Windows Remote Management (Compatibility)

NOTE: You must perform this step for the remote coordinator system and for all nodes of the cluster that you are updating in the Cluster or Coordinator mode.

    4. Run the Enable-PSRemoting PowerShell command on the remote coordinator system and on all nodes of the cluster being updated.

For more information, see the following Microsoft TechNet articles:

  • Occasionally, while installing updates in the Coordinator mode, the update fails.

    Perform the following steps:

    1. Right-click the Update Tool icon on the desktop and click Properties.

The Update Tool Properties window is displayed.

    2. Click Shortcut and then enter %WINDIR% in Start in.

    3. Click Apply and then click OK.

  • The service release GUI does not display the text for hotfixes, Windows updates, and security updates that are available on the Microsoft website. Only generic messages are displayed for these updates.

There is no workaround for this issue.

  • Pool Manager does not support conversion of spare drives to data drives.

Go to HP Smart Storage Administrator (HP SSA) and remove the spare drive from the pool and assign it as a data drive.

For information on known issues and workarounds, see the Release Notes of your product listed in ???.
