Description

These release notes describe I/O module firmware version 2.74 for HPE D6020 disk enclosures.

NOTE:

The Smart Component that is used to install the firmware has its own version. There are 2.74, 2.74(A), and 2.74(B) versions of the Smart Component available. The Smart Component version change was done for compatibility with newer host OS versions. All contain the same 2.74 version of disk enclosure firmware. If you have already installed Smart Component 2.74, it is not necessary to install 2.74(A) or 2.74(B). If you do need to upgrade, you should use the latest Smart Component available.

Fixes

  • When an I/O module is removed or reset, the correct temperature sensor report is now generated.

  • When there is no drive in a bay, the drive bay LED will now not turn on.

Installation guidelines

  • Only perform firmware updates during a system maintenance window, with all I/O to the system halted.

  • In a single domain configuration, updating the I/O modules under certain circumstances causes the update to fail. Specifically, if you host an OS on the disk enclosure (or any storage device). This issue occurs because the Smart Component resets the I/O modules after every update attempt.

    NOTE:

    The I/O modules in the disk enclosures are also called Storage Enclosure Processors (SEPs).

  • In disk enclosures with dual I/O modules, the same firmware version must be installed on both I/O modules. Running different firmware versions may cause unexpected results.

  • Do not power-cycle or restart the enclosure during the firmware update. Doing so can cause functionality loss on the enclosure. It typically takes several minutes for the firmware to load.

  • Firmware update progress messages are logged to:

    • <systemdrive>\CPQSYSTEM\Log\D6020.log (Windows)

    • /var/cpq/D6020.log (VMware, Linux)

  • The update summary is logged to:

    • <systemdrive>\CPQSYSTEM\Log\cpqsetup.log (Windows)

    • /var/cpq/Component.log (VMware, Linux)

Installation instructions

Follow the installation instructions for your operating system. You can also use Smart Update Manager (SUM) to complete the installation.

Installing firmware using the VMWare Smart Component

Procedure
  1. Enable Tech Support Mode on the ESXi host.
  2. Log in as root.
    IMPORTANT:

    You must be root to apply the ROM update.

  3. Place the Smart Component in a temporary directory.
  4. To unzip the Smart Component, enter the following command, where CP0xxxxx is the name of the Smart Component:
    unzip CP0xxxxx.zip
  5. From the same directory, execute the Smart Component. For parameters to use with the command, see Command options for Linux and VMware.
    ./CP0xxxxx.vmexe
  6. To complete the firmware installation, follow the Smart Component prompts.
  7. Disable Tech Support Mode on the ESXi host.

Installing firmware using the Linux firmware rpm

Procedure
  1. Enter the following command to install the firmware rpm, which extracts the contents to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu.
    rpm -ivh <rpm_filename>

    The CP0xxxxx.scexe script is located in the hp-scexe-compat folder. The setup file is located in the firmware-d6020-<version>-* folder, where <version> is the version of the rpm installed.

  2. To install firmware, execute ONE of the following commands. For parameters to use with the command, see Command options for Linux and VMware.
    # ./CP0xxxxx.scexe (in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/hp-scexe-compat) 
    #. /setup (in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/firmware-d6020-<version>-*)

    The results of the firmware installation are saved to the Component.log file, located in the /var/cpq/ directory.

  3. To uninstall the rpm, run the following command:
    rpm -e <rpm_package_name>

Installing firmware using the Windows executable wizard

Procedure
  1. Place the downloaded firmware package in a temporary directory.
  2. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory containing the download.
  3. Double click the executable file.
  4. Follow the onscreen prompts.

Installing firmware using Windows Command Prompt

Procedure
  1. Open the Command Prompt.
  2. Enter the following command, where CP0xxxxx is the name of the Smart Component. For parameters to use with the command, see Command options for Windows.
    CP0xxxxx.exe

Firmware installation using Smart Update Manager (SUM) from Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP)

Depending on the operating system, you can install firmware online, online and remotely, or offline.

Installing firmware online and remotely for VMware

Procedure
  1. Place the desired firmware to be installed in the /SPP20xxxxx/packages directory.
  2. Enter the following command:
    CD /packages and ./hpsum
  3. Click Next.
  4. Click Add Single Target.
  5. Enter the IP or DNS address of the ESXi host to be updated.
  6. Enter the ESXi host credentials (username of root or administrator and password).
  7. Follow the SUM prompts to complete the firmware installation.

Installing firmware offline for Linux

Procedure
  1. Place the desired firmware to be installed in the /SPP20xxxxx/packages directory on the USB key.
  2. Place the SPP on a USB key using the USB Key Creator Utility, which is available at: https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_360731071b404454b454390208.
  3. Boot from the newly created Service Pack for ProLiant USB key.
  4. Follow the SUM prompts to complete the firmware installation.

Installing firmware online for Linux

Procedure
  1. Log in as root (you must be root to apply the ROM update).
  2. Place the desired firmware to be installed in the /SPP20xxxxx/packages directory.
  3. Run the launch_sum.sh in the root of the ISO.
  4. To complete the firmware installation, follow the onscreen prompts.

Installing firmware online for Windows

Procedure
  1. Place the desired firmware to be installed in the \SPP20xxxxx\packages directory.
  2. Run the launch_sum.bat in the root of the ISO. For parameters to use with the command, see Command options for Windows.
  3. To complete the firmware installation, follow the onscreen prompts.

Command options for Linux and VMware

Firmware installation using Integrated Smart Update Tools (iSUT)
