INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Please review all instructions and the "Hewlett-Packard Support Tool License Terms" or your Hewlett-Packard support terms and conditions for precautions, scope of license, restrictions, and limitation of liability and warranties, before installing this package. It is important that you read and understand these instructions completely before you begin. This can determine your success in completing the firmware update.

NOTE: Should you have McAfee firewall installed, refer "KNOWN INSTALLATION ISSUES" mentioned below in this Release Note.

A. Extracting and Running HP SUM

  1. Download the binary "bl8x0ci2_fw_bndl_win.exe" to a new folder on your Windows system.
  2. Double click the file, bl8x0ci2_fw_bndl_win.exe, to run it.
  3. Click the "Extract" button.
  4. When asked, browse and select or create a new folder to extract bundle contents. HP SUM and firmware components must reside in the same folder. After extraction completes click "OK" and then "Close" button.
  5. Execute "hpsum.exe" as Administrator (with superuser privilege). Executing hpsum.exe will bring up a graphical user interface of the HP Smart Update Manager (HP SUM). HP SUM provides an easy-to-use graphical interface that enables you to deploy and maintain firmware components.
NOTE: HP SUM 4.9.5 requires a workaround to run in Japanese. Please see ‘Workaround for running HP SUM 4.9.5 in Japanese’ instructions below.

NOTE: HP SUM also provides a Command Line Interface (CLI) that allows user to perform scripted installations in silent mode. For more information please refer to the HP SUM User Guide or the "CLIHelp.txt" file in the extracted folder.

B. Installing the Firmware Components using HP SUM - Graphical User Mode

  1. Once started, a page displays with HP SUM introduction content on it. The introduction describes HP SUM, its usage, enhancements (if any), and EVA bundle information.
  2. Choose - Define Repositories that you want to be considered for updating
    1. The Source Selections screen allows you to choose directories where smart components are located. The directory to which the bundle is extracted is the default location.
    2. You can optionally have HP SUM check www.hp.com for additional metadata needed for the utility to discover devices.
    3. HP SUM will build an inventory of firmware bundles - packages that can be used to update firmware.
    4. The Inventory Progress screen displays while HP SUM builds an inventory of available updates.
    5. Click the "Next" button to move on to the next step.
  3. Define - Select Targets: i.e., servers you want to update
    1. The "Select Targets" screen enables you to choose one or more targets for component installation.
NOTE: "Local Host" is not applicable for installing the firmware updates included in this bundle.
    2. The target for installation can be managed in two ways:
      1. Manage individual target by selecting "Add Single Target"
      2. Manage a collection of Targets as a group by selecting "Manage Groups". Each group can contain one or more targets.

        Managing Target Individually

Click "Add New Target". Fill in this page by providing the following details of the target:

        1. Enter the DNS name or IP address of the target.
        2. Choose the Target type from the drop down.
        3. Enter the description of the target entry to identify the host for future use.
        4. Finally, provide the user name and password of the selected target. HP SUM will try to connect to the remote host and validate the login credentials.

Managing a Collection of Targets as a Group

        1. To manage any group, first the individual targets should be added. For that, follow the instructions of "Managing Target Individually".
        2. Once the targets are added, click "Manage groups".
          1. Enter a name for the Group and the description.
          2. Select the available targets to add it in the group.
      3. To update OA firmware, enter the OA IP address or DNS name. Do not enter the Blade IP address.
    3. HP SUM contacts the host to validate the credential details one at a time for each host.
    4. HP SUM runs a discovery routine that determines which Firmware Components are already installed on the remote host.
  4. Select what you want to install.
    1. HP SUM displays firmware item to be installed on the hosts.
    2. For more details and component level granularity, select the item and click the "Select Components" link.
IMPORTANT: Both iLO and SFW components must be installed together as a pair on the system.
NOTE: If firmware is latest or already up-to-date version, HP SUM displays the message "Nothing-to-Install". You can override and choose to perform force reinstallation or downgrade the firmware by clicking the "Installation Option" and checking “Force Install” option.
NOTE: System Firmware update supports delayed activation - where the new firmware gets downloaded to the iLO but is programmed only when you power down the system at a convenient time. Delayed activation is the default setting for SFW update. This setting can be changed by doing the following actions:
      1. Click "Configure Now"
      2. Select the "Upload and Activate" checkbox.

If "Upload and Activate" is selected, HP SUM will do the following actions:

      1. Send a graceful shutdown and power off request to the system as part of the update
      2. Then power up the system after the System Firmware has been programmed.

If you choose to do the power off manually, the programming will take approximately 8 minutes to complete the programming operation before power can be turned on again.

    3. Repeat the above 2 steps for all targets listed, until HP SUM displays "Ready" against each listed items to be installed.
  5. Launch the update - Install
    1. Proceed with installation of the selected firmware on the selected hosts by clicking the "Install" button on the bottom-right corner of the screen.
    2. HP SUM displays the progress of the firmware update on the target.
    3. Do not interrupt HP SUM until it completes the firmware installations on all remote hosts.
    4. When the update completes, HP SUM displays success message (or failure message in case of firmware update failure) for each host.
    5. HP SUM Debug Logs are located in "\tmp\hp_sum" folder on the local system.
Workaround for running HP SUM 4.9.5 in Japanese:

When running HP SUM on Windows:

  1. Create a new text file using Notepad, or other text editor
  2. Enter (or cut and paste) the following lines
         @Echo off
:: HP SUM workaround for Japanese support
         echo REBOOTALLOWED = YES > patch_ja.txt
         hpsum.exe -inputfile=patch_ja.txt %*
         del patch_ja.txt
  3. Save the file as hpsum_ja.cmd in the same directory where hpsum.exe exists
  4. Start HP SUM by double clicking hpsum_ja.cmd
Continue to use this command file whenever running HP SUM (i.e., there is no need to redo steps 1-3 if this command file exists)

C. Using HP SUM Command Line Interface (CLI) Mode
Please refer to the HP SUM User Guide or the "CLIHelp.txt" file in the extracted folder.

HP SUM User Guides will be available in the following URLs shortly:

COMPATIBILITY/INTEROPERABILITY:

  1. WARNING: Do not disconnect power supply to HP Integrity Server during the firmware upgrade process or else the ROM will be corrupted.
